PROACTIVE DRUG OVERDOSE INVESTIGATIONS
Lafayette Police Department (Louisiana) October 16 - 17, 2024
Service Description
Drug overdoses have become routine calls for service in modern policing. Whether a death is involved often determines the manner of investigation and the resources allocated to the case. However, the same suppliers are responsible for all overdoses and should be proactively investigated to prevent the next death before it happens. The scene of an overdose - fatal or not - is a perfect place to start. This course arms officers with the skills and investigative methodologies needed to start a proactive investigation into the supplier who delivered the harmful dose. The materials include real-world case studies demonstrating the effectiveness of conducting short-term investigations to combat the growing social crisis and for bringing closure to those effected. This course is instructed by experienced street crimes and narcotics investigators Tanner Jenkins and Scott Courrege. Tanner is currently a Narcotics Division commander and supervises 15 agents. Since Tanner took command of the unit in 2018, his agents have seized over $7,200,000 in United States currency and made over 650 felony drug arrests. Tanner has been recognized in federal court as a drug investigation expert and has previous assignments with SWAT, street crimes, and uniform patrol. Scott is an attorney who engages in extensive in law enforcement training and police practices consulting. Scott has over 20 years of law enforcement experience, including federal employment with the United States Border Patrol and the Drug Enforcement Administration, and he is still an active part-time deputy assigned to Training. Scott regularly instructs numerous law enforcement courses and has been recognized by POST and by numerous courts as a subject matter expert in various areas.
